Quick decision: start with Google Forms when your team already works in Google Drive and Sheets and needs a familiar survey, quiz, or internal response workflow. Evaluate Tally when a public-facing intake needs file uploads without a respondent account, more workflow features under its free fair-use policy, or a later path to a custom domain and removed product branding.
This comparison uses official product documentation. We have not benchmarked completion rates, support, uptime, spam handling, or editor usability and do not claim hands-on testing.
Choose by the first job that fails
You need a simple survey tied to Google Sheets
Google Forms creates surveys and quizzes, shows response charts, and can store responses in a new or existing Google Sheet. It is the lower-friction choice when collaborators, permissions, and downstream analysis already live in Google Workspace.
You collect files from people outside Google
Google’s help says respondents must sign in to a Google Account to answer a file-upload question. Tally’s documentation says its respondents can upload without creating or signing into a Tally account; its free plan currently allows individual files up to 10 MB, subject to fair use. Test this requirement in a private browser before choosing because account friction can stop a public intake form.
You need a branded form URL
Google’s product page lists colors, images, and fonts for visual customization. Tally documents custom domains and removal of its branding as paid Pro features. Use those only when the brand or URL requirement is measurable; a working free form is often enough while validating the workflow.
You need unfinished-response or retention controls
Tally documents partial submissions as a Pro feature and configurable submission retention as a Business feature. Partial submissions have limitations: they do not trigger email notifications or sync through integrations, although they can be downloaded separately as CSV. Confirm that those constraints still solve your actual follow-up process.
Free does not mean identical
- Tally: its current pricing page lists unlimited forms and submissions under a fair-use policy, plus conditional logic, calculations, file uploads, redirects, and several integrations on Free.
- Google Forms: its official product and help pages emphasize surveys, quizzes, branching, real-time charts, collaboration, embedding, and direct response storage in Google Sheets.
- Access trade-off: Google sign-in is required when limiting a form to one response and for file-upload questions. Do not discover that only after publishing a public intake.
Why this guide does not quote a Tally monthly price
On September 19, Tally’s official pricing page and its official plans-and-pricing help article displayed different monthly amounts for Pro and Business. Because both sources are first-party and the conflict was unresolved, Nico does not choose one figure or present either as authoritative. Check Tally’s live pricing page before making a purchase decision.
A ten-minute comparison test
- Build the same five-question form in both tools, including the most sensitive required field.
- Open each form on a phone and in a signed-out private browser.
- If files matter, upload one allowed test file and verify the respondent login requirement.
- Submit, correct, close, and reopen the form. Confirm where the response and any file are stored.
- Send the response to the system that owns the next action—often Sheets, Notion, Airtable, or an inbox.
- Export the data and list every permission that must be removed if you stop using the tool.
Use synthetic or consenting test data. Never put real client, employee, medical, financial, or identity data into a trial workflow before reviewing access, retention, deletion, and applicable privacy obligations.
